Bentonite Muds and Borehole Stabilization Additives

 


In geological diamond drilling, encountering highly fractured, faulted, or porous rock formations often leads to fluid loss, instability, and catastrophic borehole collapse. Sodium bentonite clay muds remain a foundational element in drilling fluid technology, providing the necessary thixotropic properties and wall-building filter cakes required to stabilize difficult ground conditions before casing strings are set.

High-grade sodium bentonite hydrates rapidly in fresh water, swelling to many times its dry volume to form a colloidal suspension. When pumped down the drill string, this suspension forms a thin, impermeable filter cake along the borehole wall, sealing porous zones and preventing drilling fluid loss into the formation. Furthermore, bentonite muds exhibit non-Newtonian flow behavior: they possess high viscosity under static conditions to suspend heavy drill cuttings and core fragments, yet thin out rapidly under the high shear forces generated at the core bit face during rotation.

Procuring bentonite and complementary fluid additives—such as fluid-loss reducers, deflocculants, and lost circulation materials (LCM)—in wholesale quantities is vital for maintaining continuous operations on remote exploration sites. Managing mud weight, funnel viscosity, and sand content through routine field testing ensures that the drilling fluid protects the core sample from thermal and hydraulic erosion, guaranteeing high core recovery percentages for geological analysis.
